Some of the most recommended seafood dishes to prepare at home include shrimp, mussels, clams, squid, and scallops. These seafood dishes are versatile, easy to cook, and adapt well to a variety of recipes.

To identify fresh seafood, look for a mild, pleasant ocean scent, without strong or ammonia-like odors. Shrimp and other shellfish should have firm flesh and a bright color. In the case of mollusks, make sure the shells are tightly closed.

Fresh seafood should be stored in the refrigerator at a temperature of 0 to 4 degrees Celsius. Place it in an airtight container or on a plate covered with a damp cloth. If you won't be eating it soon, it's best to freeze it. Frozen seafood should be kept at -18 degrees Celsius or lower.

Shellfish inhabit diverse marine and freshwater environments. Crustaceans are typically found on sandy and rocky bottoms, while mollusks inhabit intertidal zones, riverbeds, and ocean floors. Each species has specific adaptations for its habitat, such as the ability to burrow into the sand or adhere to hard surfaces.

Shellfish have diverse reproductive methods and life cycles. Crustaceans, such as shrimp, release their eggs into the water, where they develop into larvae before becoming adults. Mollusks, such as mussels and clams, also release eggs and sperm into the water, where external fertilization occurs. The larvae then go through several developmental stages before settling and growing into adults. In general, shellfish life cycles include larval, juvenile, and adult stages.
