Prawns thawing on a black plate

Defrosting Prawns and Shrimp, How to Do It?

Most of the time when we defrost prawns , shrimp , and other shellfish, we do it incorrectly. These delicate products require specific defrosting guidelines. Do you know what they are?

Prawns , king prawns, and shrimp are commonly eaten in Spain, although they are more prevalent during festivals and large celebrations. Or it depends on the region and the time of year.

It's common for consumption to increase at Christmas, as well as during wedding season, and it's quite difficult to find fresh seafood.

Having frozen shrimp, prawns, or prawns can save you this trouble and help you enjoy this delicacy whenever you want.

But it's important to know the recommendations for defrosting shrimp and prawns without them spoiling.

How to defrost prawns and shrimp

It is important to differentiate between products that are frozen already cooked and those that are raw.

Therefore, defrosting raw prawns is not the same as defrosting cooked prawns, and different guidelines must be followed for each.

Below, we'll explain how to defrost cooked and raw shrimp without falling into the most common myths.

Defrosting cooked prawns or shrimp

Cooked prawns should be defrosted in the refrigerator, without breaking the cold chain. Ideally, they should be left overnight to defrost completely.

It will depend on the quantity; defrosting 200 grams of shrimp is not the same as defrosting 1 kg.

For cooked shrimp, the same process applies: remove the package or the desired amount from the freezer and place it in the refrigerator. One kilogram of shrimp may need about 10 to 12 hours to defrost.

What you should not do is freeze cooked prawns or shrimp directly at room temperature, as this will lose flavor and texture and encourage the growth of bacteria.

Defrosting raw prawns and shrimp

To defrost raw prawns or shrimp, you can use the same method as when they are cooked.

Remove the desired amount of prawns from the freezer and place them in the refrigerator. Let them defrost for approximately 10 hours per kilogram of product.

But, when the seafood is raw, there is another, faster option for defrosting.

It consists of placing raw shrimp or prawns under cold running water, or even placing them in a deep bowl of cold water for about 10 or 15 minutes. Although this method isn't optimal, it can be used as a last resort when unexpected visitors arrive.

What is the fastest way to defrost shrimp?

The way to defrost shrimp quickly is to use the cold water jet method we explained earlier. Although we repeat, it's not the best way to defrost shrimp.

We simply need to submerge the frozen prawns under cold water and leave them for about 15 minutes until they become tender.

To know the exact moment when they are defrosted, you should touch or pierce the shrimp and see if it has its normal texture.

To avoid problems, such as not fully defrosting, we recommend defrosting products in the cold storage at the bottom of the refrigerator the night before preparing or eating them.
